The European Parliament is considering a motion of no confidence in European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen. This is reported by Euractiv and Euronews.
The author of the motion was Romanian far-right MP Gheorghe Piperea, leader of the Alliance for Romanian Unity (AUR), which is part of the European Conservatives and Reformists faction. Last week, he collected 74 signatures under the document, and although some MPs withdrew them, the number of signatories later increased to 79 - enough for a formal consideration of the issue.
Among the reasons for the no-confidence are allegations of von der Leyen's secret correspondence with Pfizer CEO Albert Bourla during negotiations on the purchase of vaccines against COVID-19, as well as the alleged ineffective use of funds after the pandemic and the promotion of "green policies" through funding for NGOs.
European Parliament President Roberta Metsola has already confirmed that the initiative complies with the procedural rules. The discussion is scheduled for July 7, and the vote is scheduled for July 10. At least 361 votes out of 720 are needed to pass the vote.
However, the chances of von der Leyen's resignation are assessed as low. "There will be a vote against this proposal, I am sure of it. Although the majority is dissatisfied with her policy, until it forces her to leave," Piperea said. At the same time, he suggested that this could be the first step towards new similar initiatives.
Recall that in 2024, Ursula von der Leyen was approved for the second time as President of the European Commission - until 2029.
In will be recalled, that Ukraine has fulfilled all obligations to start negotiations on joining the European Union - now it is a step for the EU, said European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.
