Taiwan begins large-scale Han Kuang exercises amid China threat

Taiwan is preparing for the largest military exercises in its history, Han Kuang, which will start on July 9 and will last for ten days with the participation of more than 22,000 reservists.

This is reported by Reuters.

According to the scenario of the exercises, the country's Armed Forces will practice countering a blockade and amphibious invasion by China, simulating fire strikes by sea and air.

The exercises will also include civil defense training: it is planned to practice missile warning systems and evacuation procedures in major cities on the island. According to the head of combat planning at the Ministry of Defense, Tung Chih-hsing, during Han Kuang, not only military maneuvers will be practiced, but also coordination of responses to protect the civilian population.

Tensions in the Asia-Pacific region are growing due to the threat of China's invasion of Taiwan, which is an ally of the United States. The Chinese Communist Party considers Taiwan its territory and has been stepping up rhetoric about "reunification" since 2022. US President Joe Biden has said the US will defend Taiwan if attacked.

Chinese military aircraft enter Taiwan's air defense zone more than 245 times a month, compared to less than 10 five years ago.

About 120 crossings of the median line in the Taiwan Strait are recorded every month, effectively leveling this unofficial border.

As a reminder, the People's Liberation Army of China (PLA) conducted military exercises in the Taiwan Strait, during which it practiced a marine landing. The maneuvers took place on May 20, the first anniversary of Taiwan's President Lài Qīngdé's tenure in power.
