Britain has announced the retirement of the Royal Train, which has transported monarchs and their entourage for more than a century and a half. Instead of this historical relic, the Royal Family will choose two new helicopters.
This is reported by The Sun.
In the last financial year, the train was used only twice for official trips, spending about GBP 78,000 on maintenance, while the maintenance of nine carriages from the 80s costs the state GBP 1.2 million a year. The Palace report confirms that the renewal of old carriages will cost much more than their full technical service life.
The train is planned to be retired by early spring 2027: before that, the Royal Train will make a "sincere farewell tour" of the country, and later will retire to the museum.
For rational logistics, the Royal Family prefers helicopters, which have already proven themselves as a more flexible means of transportation. Over the year, the Royal Family made 141 flights for a total of GBP 475,000, while train costs have halved.
The train's withdrawal from service fits into the overall strategy of modernizing the Royal Economy, which includes a transition to transport more adapted to the modern needs of government trips and representative events.
As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, a floral dress that Princess Diana wore to visit children in hospitals was sold on Thursday for USD 520,000.
