A new type of air defense unit will appear in Ukraine, which will be equipped with interceptor drones to combat russian drones. This was reported by the spokesman for the Air Force of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Yurii Ihnat in a commentary to Deutsche Welle.
According to Ihnat, russian troops continue to intensively attack Ukrainian settlements with Shahed drones, as well as fake drones, the purpose of which is to disorient Ukrainian air defense.
"Recently, the russian federation has been sending drones at an altitude of about 2 kilometers. That is why it is becoming increasingly difficult for our mobile units to intercept Shahed drones," Ihnat explained.
He noted that it is much easier to identify and shoot down drones when they fly lower. "Opening fire on them is effective only when the drone is flying at an altitude of up to 1 kilometer," the spokesman said. According to him, such targets are first detected acoustically, then visually, using thermal imagers and sights.
Due to the difficulty of intercepting fast Shaheds, experts are calling for the deployment of domestic production of modern air defense systems.
"We are forming new units to cover cities in the depths of the country using air defense systems equipped with interceptor drones, and we are also training drone pilots," Ihnat emphasized.
As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, on the night of Sunday, June 29, the military of the aggressor country of russia used 537 air attack vehicles against Ukraine. Most of the enemy targets were shot down by Ukrainian defenders, but there are also hits.
