Large-scale protest took place in Serbia. Demonstrators demanded early elections

On Saturday, June 28, a large-scale protest took place in Belgrade, Serbia. Participants demanded early elections and an end to the long-standing rule of President Aleksandar Vučić. The protest escalated into a clash between demonstrators and police. It was reported by Reuters.

After the protest ended at around 10:00 p.m. (local time), some protesters threw bottles, stones and flares at police, who used force to disperse them in several places in central Belgrade.

Protesters shouted: "Lower your shields," calling on the police to stop interfering.

Police detained several dozen protesters, and six police officers were also reported to have been injured in the clashes.

President Vučić himself said that the protesters were trying to overthrow the state.

"They (protesters) wanted to topple Serbia, and they have failed," he wrote on his Instagram page.

A few days before the protest, the police arrested about a dozen anti-government activists, accusing them of undermining the constitution and terrorism. All of them denied the charges.

As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, on January 27, a large-scale rally was held in the center of the Serbian capital and clashes occurred.

The massive protests in Serbia began after a roof collapsed at a train station in the northern city of Novi Sad in November, killing 15 people. Students and the opposition accused the authorities of corruption during renovations at the station, which had opened just months before the tragedy.
