Putin says confiscation of russian assets "useful" for global economy

Putin says confiscation of russian assets "useful" for global economyPresident of the aggressor country, the russian federation, vladimir putin, has commented on the decision of Western countries to freeze and possibly use russian assets, calling these actions open robbery, which, according to him, can have a positive impact on global financial processes.

"They constantly say that they are going to steal our money. But as soon as this happens, the movement towards the regionalization of payment systems will accelerate and will undoubtedly become irreversible. And this is generally beneficial for the global economy. Perhaps it is worth paying for it," russian media quoted putin as saying.

He also stated that it is more legally correct to call the West's actions robbery, not theft:

"My basic education is in law. Theft is the secret theft of property. And here everything happens openly, therefore it is robbery," the kremlin leader explained.

Putin once again emphasized that russia will consistently develop alternative financial instruments and reduce dependence on the Western economy. He also accused international financial institutions, in particular the World Bank, of political bias.

After the start of a full-scale war against Ukraine in February 2022, the G7 countries froze the assets of the Central Bank of russia and the National Welfare Fund. According to estimates at the time, this amounted to more than USD 300 billion in currency, including euros, dollars, pounds sterling, Japanese yen and others.

In 2024, the G7 leaders agreed on a mechanism for directing profits from frozen assets to help Ukraine, in particular to repay a loan of about USD 50 billion. In March 2025, a group of US senators proposed moving to the full confiscation of all frozen assets of the russian federation and called on allies to do the same.

Meanwhile, Ukraine will receive 350 British air defense missiles at the expense of frozen russian assets.
