White House recommends cutting funding for war crimes investigation programs, including against Ukraine — Reuters

The White House administration has recommended ending US funding for nearly 20 international programs investigating war crimes — including those committed by russia during the war in Ukraine.

Reuters reported this, citing sources familiar with the relevant government documents.

The decision is not yet final. The US State Department has until July 11 to appeal the recommendation. At the same time, two officials with whom journalists spoke expressed doubt that Secretary of State Marco Rubio would insist on continuing support for most of the programs.

One of the sources suggested that Rubio may still defend funding for individual initiatives, in particular for documenting crimes in Ukraine.

Among the programs that could be cut are Global Rights Compliance, which collects evidence of sexual violence and torture during the war, as well as Legal Action Worldwide, which deals with cases against the russian military.

This potential solution is of concern to human rights activists, as such programs play a key role in recording crimes and preparing for future international trials.

As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, in March of this year it became known that the United States had withdrawn from the group of countries investigating russian war crimes against Ukraine.
