Chinese leader Xi Jinping will not participate in this year's BRICS summit, which will be held in Rio de Janeiro on July 6-7. This will be the first time that the head of the PRC will miss the annual meeting of the bloc's countries.
As reported by the South China Morning Post, citing officials, the Chinese side informed the Brazilian government that Xi Jinping had a "schedule conflict", so the delegation will be led by Premier of the State Council of the PRC Li Qiang.
Chinese participants in the preparation of the summit also suggest that Xi's absence may be due to the fact that he has already met with Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva twice in the past year - at the G20 summit in November 2024 and in May 2025.
In turn, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun told the Brazilian publication Folha de S.Paulo that "information about Xi Jinping's participation in the summit will be provided at the appropriate time."
