After losing the main European gas markets, russia is actively reorienting itself towards the export of mineral fertilizers, which are produced from natural gas.
This was announced by the former CEO of the Gas Transportation System Operator of Ukraine (GTSOU) Serhii Makohon on Facebook, Ukrainian News Agency reports.
Makohon noted that in the first five months of 2025, the russian federation exported 19.2 million tons of fertilizers - this is 10% more than last year.
A record of 44 million tons is expected by the end of the year.
"This is similar to the Kremlin's new economic tactic: to turn fertilizers into a weapon of influence, as it was with gas. Due to the high gas content in the production of fertilizers, their export is actually a hidden export of energy carriers," the former CEO wrote.
He stated that Ukraine and its allies should take measures to restrict the import of fertilizers from the russian federation to the EU.
As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, the Council of Ministers of the European Union for Justice and Home Affairs, which took place on June 12 in Luxembourg, adopted a decision to introduce new duties on imports into the European Union of agricultural products and fertilizers produced in russia and Belarus.
Group DF, the largest producer of nitrogen fertilizers in Ukraine, expects a positive impact on the European and Ukrainian markets from a sharp increase in EU duties on fertilizers from russia and Belarus, which will allow European and Ukrainian producers to regain their shares in these markets.
