Right to education for students aged 25+ should not be exemption from obligation to defend country - Minister Lisovyi

The Minister of Education and Science of Ukraine, Oksen Lisovyi, stated that the right to education for Ukrainians aged over 25 should not be a way to be exempt from the obligation to defend the state.

He expressed this opinion during a meeting with rectors of higher education institutions in the Lviv Region, according to the minister's post on the social network.

Lisovyi added that Ukraine needs to create conditions under which the right to education will not become a mechanism for abuse. In addition, he emphasized that university leaders are responsible for those who study at their higher education institutions.

"The right to education is not an indulgence from the obligation to defend the state (...) This is not just a matter of legality, but also a matter of honor, professional reputation and civic responsibility," the minister believes.

Let us remind you that in 2024 in Ukraine, compared to the previous two years, the number of men over 25 who entered higher education institutions decreased.

Deputy Minister of Education and Science Mykhailo Vynnytskyi called the reason for the decrease in male students a change in the rules for obtaining a deferral, which has recently been available only to those who receive education sequentially.

In addition, in the period from April to August 2024, more than 23,000 male students over the age of 30 were expelled from universities. The reason for this was their academic failure or absence from classes.
