Law on multiple citizenship gives Ukrainians right to officially obtain citizenship another country without renouncing Ukrainian one - Ministry of National Unity

The Law on Multiple Citizenship, adopted by the Verkhovna Rada, gives Ukrainians the right to officially obtain the citizenship of another country without renouncing Ukrainian one. This was announced by the Ministry of National Unity, Ukrainian News Agency reports.

The Ministry notes that multiple citizenship is a strategic step to preserve the unity of the Ukrainian nation in conditions of war, global mobility, and a large diaspora.

In particular, for citizens of Ukraine, the Law on Multiple Citizenship provides for:

regulates the fact of having foreign citizenship without the threat of losing Ukrainian (provided that the other state is included in the list of countries determined by the Cabinet of Ministers);

gives the right to officially obtain the citizenship of another country without renouncing Ukrainian one (provided that the other state is included in the list of countries determined by the Cabinet of Ministers).

For citizens of other countries:

the right to acquire Ukrainian citizenship under a shortened procedure for persons of Ukrainian origin;

introduction of a new procedure for acquiring citizenship for foreigners who do not have Ukrainian ethnic roots;

the possibility of obtaining Ukrainian citizenship without the requirement to renounce existing citizenship, except in cases where it concerns the citizenship of an aggressor state;

a simplified procedure for obtaining citizenship for foreigners who are doing military service in Ukraine;

the right to Ukrainian citizenship for persons persecuted in their countries for political reasons.

At the same time, the ministry emphasizes that a clear rule is established for both categories: a person who has a different passport, but is a citizen of Ukraine, is recognized on the territory of Ukraine only as a citizen of Ukraine.

The Ministry of National Unity notes that more than 130 countries in the world recognize multiple citizenship (including most countries of the European Union), while 90% of Ukrainians abroad are in countries where multiple citizenship is allowed.

Vice Prime Minister, Minister of National Unity Oleksii Chernyshov noted that if in 1991 there were 52 million Ukrainians in Ukraine, today there are a little more than 30 million in the territory controlled by the Ukrainian government, according to the UN forecast, this decline will only continue and this is not just an alarming statistic, it is a challenge of a national scale.

As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, the Verkhovna Rada adopted a law on the introduction of the institution of multiple citizenship (No. 11469), initiated by President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
