Israel attacks one of Iran's main nuclear facilities

Israel has carried out several strikes on the Natanz nuclear facility, Iran's main uranium enrichment facility, The New York Times, First Post and News18 reported on Friday, June 13, citing the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran.

“The Iranian Atomic Energy Organization confirmed that the Natanz facility, a central part of the country’s nuclear infrastructure, sustained damage. However, there was no indication of a radioactive leak. The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), which monitors Iran’s nuclear activities, said it had not detected any rise in radiation levels at the site,” the article says.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) claims to have caused significant damage to Iran’s Natanz nuclear facility. At the same time, the head of the International Atomic Energy Agency, Rafael Mariano Grossi, told Israeli President Isaac Herzog that the nuclear facility was “severely damaged.”

Natanz, located about 225 kilometers south of Tehran, is considered Iran’s main uranium enrichment center. According to media reports, it was itself the main target of the Israeli strikes, and the damage to it was severe. The facility is only partially underground and contains a number of sophisticated centrifuges, including the most advanced models, for enriching uranium to high levels. The IAEA previously reported that there are nearly 14,000 centrifuges operating there, with thousands more on site in an inactive state.
