The most successful and daring operations carried out by Ukraine in recent years - from the elimination of war criminals deep in russia to sabotage operations in Africa and Syria - were carried out with the participation of the Defense Intelligence.
This is stated in an article by the online publication Euromaidan Press, published on June 8, the Ukrainian News agency reports.
As the article says, Ukrainian intelligence boldly crosses "red lines" on three continents - where russia has demonstrated its power for years: from the suburbs of moscow to the deserts of Mali.
The activities of the Defense Intelligence of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine, headed by Lieutenant General Kyrylo Budanov, now extend far beyond the borders of Ukraine. This reflects the doctrine that was formed during the russian-Ukrainian war in cooperation with Western partners such as the CIA and MI6.
If earlier the world's "gold standards" of intelligence work were set by the Israeli Mossad, today it is done by Ukrainian intelligence; while Ukraine's partners discuss "red lines" and the risks of escalation, the Defense Intelligence fighters under the leadership of Budanov are doing what no Western intelligence service dares to do.
British political scientist Mark Galeotti notes that the kremlin is well aware of the Defense Intelligence’ capabilities, and the russian security services "treat it with considerable professional respect, albeit with hostility."
Working in tandem with the SSU, the Defense Intelligence tracked down russian war criminals and collaborators even in moscow: in recent months they have managed to eliminate several russian generals.
The article notes that on June 1 of this year, after 18 months of planning, Ukrainian intelligence services in one strike disabled 34% of russian long-range bombers capable of carrying nuclear weapons; thus, Ukraine also did the United States a great favor by striking Tu-95 bombers, which for decades were considered a nuclear threat to them.
Operation of Ukrainian special services
Euromaidan Press also quotes Ukrainian MP Oleksandra Ustinova, who notes, in particular, that the Defense Intelligence operations expose the shortcomings of russia's political and security system, undermine confidence in its military leadership, and send signals to the kremlin itself.
"The Defense Intelligence also showed the West that Ukraine's capabilities go far beyond what is traditionally attributed to us," says Ustinova.
According to Euromaidan Press, experts agree that the Defense Intelligence’s activities dispelled the West's long-standing fear that any Ukrainian strike on russia would provoke a large-scale escalation.
