After the occupation of part of the southern territories of Ukraine, the area under watermelons in the country has recovered.
This is announced by agronews.ua, Ukrainian News Agency reports.
The central and eastern regions have become the new leaders in production.
According to the forecast of the Ministry of Agrarian Policy, this year the harvest will reach 240,000 tons, and the total area under watermelons and melons will be 30,000 hectares.
“The Poltava, Kyiv, Zakarpattia regions have successfully filled part of the market and at the same time established the export of first-class berries to Europe,” notes campaign management manager of BASF T.O.V. LLC Volodymyr Voevodin.
It is noted that growing high-quality watermelons is only half the battle.
Before the start of the full-scale russian invasion, Ukraine sold significant volumes of melons to the EU.
In 2020, exports amounted to almost 36,000 tons of watermelons and melons, setting a record for the volume of melon exports.
In 2024, the export of Ukrainian watermelons showed encouraging results, growing despite the difficulties caused by the war and the occupation of part of the southern regions.
According to data for January-August 2024, Ukraine exported 1,580 tons of watermelons worth USD 314,000.
Compared to the same period in 2023, when only 39.99 tons were exported, an increase of 39.5 times.
Last year, the main markets for Ukrainian watermelons were Latvia, Lithuania and Poland, which together provided 92% of total exports.
As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, in early August 2024, the Ukrainian National Office of Intellectual Property and Innovation (IP Office) registered a new geographical indication (GI) - "Kherson Watermelon".
