UN notes increase in civilian casualties in Ukraine – Anadolu Agency

The number of civilian casualties in Ukraine has increased sharply this year.

Rosemary DiCarlo, the UN Under-Secretary-General for Political and Peacebuilding Affairs, reported this at a Security Council meeting on Ukraine. Her words were quoted by Anadolu Agency on Friday, May 30.

DiCarlo noted that 2025 has become a particularly deadly year for Ukraine, as civilian deaths in the first quarter of this year are 59% higher than in the same period in 2024. According to her, recent attacks indicate that the war could reach a new "destructive level".

"In total, at least 13,279 civilians have been killed since the start of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, including 707 children. The confirmed number of wounded civilians is 32,449, including 2,068 children," DiCarlo said.

Senior UN officials have called for an immediate ceasefire and urgent humanitarian assistance amid the escalation of the conflict.

As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, on May 22, the non-governmental human rights organization Human Rights Watch said that as a result of attacks by the army of the aggressor country russia, the number of casualties among the civilian population of Ukraine has increased.

On April 30 of this year, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine stated that since the beginning of 2025, 577 civilians have been killed as a result of attacks by the russian army.
