Possible change of exchange rate-forming currency from dollar to euro unlikely to affect Ukrainians or businesses - NBU

Deputy Governor of the National Bank of Ukraine Serhii Nikolaychuk believes that the possible future change of the exchange rate-forming currency from the dollar to the euro is unlikely to affect the lives of Ukrainians or businesses.

He said this in an interview with Forbes Ukraine, Ukrainian News Agency reports.

"Historically, the US dollar has had much greater weight compared to other currencies. When we talk about our future, and this is EU membership. By acquiring this membership, we acquire an obligation to switch to the euro in the more distant future... It will be natural that at some point we will have to change the exchange rate-forming currency from the dollar to the euro," Nikolaychuk said.

He added that the NBU is studying this issue.

"We are studying the experience of other countries, such as Moldova, which made a similar transition last year. Today, the question of considering such a transition in the short term is not worth it. This will have certain consequences before we conduct our exchange rate policy. But it should not have a significant impact on the lives of ordinary citizens, or even for business, the consequences will hardly be material," Nikolaychuk emphasized.

According to him, in recent months, the share of the euro in the structure of the NBU's international reserves has fluctuated quite significantly. And this depends on what tranches the Ministry of Finance receives from international partners, in particular, from the EU. After all, these funds are included in international reserves.

As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, in March of this year, banks imported 3.1 times more cash dollars than euros.

The National Bank of Ukraine is considering the possibility of changing the base currency for the orientation of monetary policy - from the US dollar to the euro.

Such a scenario is still hypothetical, but is conditioned by a number of geopolitical and economic factors.
