US President Donald Trump said that he did not impose sanctions on russia so as not to "ruin the deal". He said this during a press conference with reporters in the Oval Office of the White House on Tuesday, May 28.
He said this, answering the question why he did not impose sanctions against russia. Trump replied that he did not want to "ruin" the chances of a peace agreement, adding that he would meet with Volodymyr Zelenskyy and putin if necessary.
"I think I'm close to concluding a deal, I don't want to ruin it by doing this," he said.
The US President said that he was "very disappointed" with the massive shelling of Ukraine by russia that took place last weekend.
"I can say that I am very disappointed with what happened a few nights ago, when people were killed in the middle of what you call negotiations. I am very disappointed with it. Very, very disappointed," Trump stressed.
The US President also agreed to sit down at the negotiating table with Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelenskyy and russian dictator vladimir putin "if necessary."
As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, US President Donald Trump said that he did not know whether russian president vladimir putin wanted to end the war.
Earlier, the WSJ reported that US President Donald Trump is considering imposing sanctions against the aggressor state of russia this week due to frustration with russian leader vladimir putin over his continued attacks on Ukraine and the slow pace of peace talks.
Earlier, after a phone call with putin, Trump said that the US would not impose tougher sanctions against russia as long as "there is a chance" for progress.
