Russian assets to remain frozen until aggression ends and Ukraine compensated - G7

The Group of Seven countries have agreed to keep russia's sovereign assets frozen until it ends its war against Ukraine and compensates for the damage caused.

This is stated in a joint communiqué adopted following the meeting of G7 finance ministers.

"We confirm that, in accordance with our legal systems, russia's sovereign assets in our jurisdictions will remain frozen until russia ends its aggression and compensates for the damage it has caused to Ukraine," the document says.

The summit participants devoted three separate points to the Ukrainian issue. They again condemned russia's full-scale war against Ukraine and noted the resilience of Ukrainian society.

"We condemn russia's continued brutal war against Ukraine and express our respect for the immense resilience of the Ukrainian people and economy. Ukraine has suffered significant damage. The G7 remains committed to unwavering support for Ukraine in defending its territorial integrity and right to exist, as well as its freedom, sovereignty and independence, on the path to a just and lasting peace," the statement said.

The ministers also supported efforts to establish a ceasefire.

"We welcome ongoing efforts to achieve a ceasefire. If such a ceasefire is not achieved, we will continue to consider all possible options, including increased pressure, including through further strengthening of sanctions," the G7 stressed.

The G7 countries also confirmed their intention to support Ukraine in its recovery.

"We will continue to coordinate support to facilitate the earliest possible recovery and reconstruction of Ukraine, including at the Ukraine Recovery Summit to be held in Rome on July 10-11, 2025. In addition, we agree to work with Ukraine to ensure that no countries or organizations, or organizations from these countries, that have financed or supplied the russian military machine will have the right to profit from the reconstruction of Ukraine," the document says.

Recall, according to White House spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt, US President Donald Trump plans to participate in this year's G7 summit, which will be held in Canada on June 15-17.
