Lithuania calls on EU to impose tough sanctions on russia to break “vicious circle” of ceasefire refusal

The European Union’s new sanctions against the aggressor country of russia should contain tougher restrictions due to Moscow’s reluctance to agree to a 30-day ceasefire in Ukraine.

According to German channel N-TV, this was stated by Lithuanian Foreign Minister Kęstutis Budrys.

According to him, russia is resorting to deception, distraction and disorganization in the issue of peace talks with Ukraine. The sole purpose of these actions is to avoid tightening sanctions.

“We Europeans must break this vicious circle, and new sanctions are the means to do so,” the minister said.

Budrys called on the EU to target russian exports of energy and nuclear fuel, as well as russian financial institutions.

As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, today, May 21, the American publication The New York Times wrote that US President Donald Trump refused to tighten sanctions against the russian federation because he seeks economic cooperation with the aggressor country.

Recall that the day before, the European Union agreed to introduce the 17th package of sanctions against russia for its full-scale military aggression against Ukraine.

Earlier, we wrote that the new package of European sanctions targets more than 100 tankers from the so-called "shadow fleet".

The EU also imposed restrictions against companies from five countries that help russia circumvent previously imposed sanctions against it.
