Russia and Ukraine agree on exchange of 1,000 for 1,000 prisoners of war – Umerov

An exchange of 1,000 prisoners of war from both sides may take place in the near future. The date has already been determined.

Ukrainian Defense Minister Rustem Umerov stated this on Friday, May 16, after negotiations with the delegation of the aggressor country, russia, in Istanbul. His words are quoted by Reuters and Ukrinform.

Umerov noted that the date for the exchange of prisoners with the russian side has already been determined. Russia and Ukraine have agreed on an exchange of 1,000 prisoners of war from each side.

"Yes, in the near future, we already know the date, but we will not talk yet," Umerov emphasized.

If the exchange of prisoners takes place, it will be the largest exchange of prisoners in more than three years since russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, on May 15, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy approved a delegation for negotiations with russia in Istanbul. The negotiations between Ukraine and russia in Istanbul lasted less than two hours.
