The new Pope Leo XIV wants to offer the Vatican as a place for peace talks between Ukraine and the aggressor country russia.
Cardinal Pietro Parolin, the Holy See’s top diplomat, told reporters about this, as quoted by Politico.
The Vatican called it "tragic" that russian dictator vladimir putin did not show up for peace talks in Turkey.
"This is all tragic because we hoped that it would be a, maybe slow, process, but with a peaceful solution to the conflict, and instead we are back at the beginning. Now we will see what to do, but the situation is difficult," Parolin said.
According to him, Pope Leo XIV intends to provide the Holy See as a neutral space for direct dialogue between Kyiv and moscow with the aim of ending the war, which has been going on for more than three years.
"The Pope plans to make the Vatican, the Holy See, available for a direct meeting between the two sides," the cardinal added.
Recall that Zelenskyy previously stated that he plans to meet with Pope Leo XIV in the near future.
Ukraine also handed over lists of Ukrainian prisoners to Pope Leo XIV.
