On the night of May 16, the Ukrainian Air Forces lost an F-16 fighter jet during a combat sortie. The plane disappeared from radar at about 3:30 a.m., when it was performing a task to repel an enemy air attack.
As the Air Forces command reported on Facebook, the pilot managed to take the plane outside the settlement and "successfully ejected".
According to preliminary information, "the pilot destroyed three air targets and worked on the fourth, using an aircraft cannon. However, an emergency situation arose on board". It was then that the pilot decided to direct the plane away from residential areas.
"Friendly fire" in this incident has been ruled out, a source in the Air Forces specified for Ukrainian Pravda.
The rescue team quickly found and evacuated the pilot. “The pilot’s well-being is satisfactory, he is in a safe place, his life and health are not in danger,” the Air Forces said.
A special commission has been created to investigate the cause of the incident, which has already begun work.
