In the Dnipropetrovsk Region, plans are underway to restore the water content of the Saksahan River and fill the Makortiv Reservoir to provide water for 1.4 million residents. This was reported on the Facebook page of the Minister of Environmental Protection and Natural Resources of Ukraine Svitlana Hrynchuk, who recently visited the region on a working visit.
The undermining of the Kakhovka HEPP dam by russian troops and the need to use water from the river to supply Kryvyi Rih with water led to the almost complete emptying of the Makortiv Reservoir.
"Currently, the water level in the reservoir is only 19.6 million cubic meters, with a norm of 57.8 million cubic meters. In the event of prolonged dry periods, filling the reservoir naturally can take about 10 years. The other two reservoirs on the river - Kresivske and Saksahanske - are constantly affected by highly mineralized mine waters," the official noted.
Therefore, to solve the problem, they are considering supplying Dnieper water from the Kamyanske Reservoir through the Saksahan riverbed and building a water pipeline about 30 km long. This will allow filling the Makortiv reservoir, improving water quality to meet the needs of residents within the river basin, and filling wells in households that are not covered by centralized water supply.
Currently, according to the minister, negotiations are underway with potential investors to implement the project.
As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, the undermining of the Kakhovka hydroelectric power station dam not only destroyed local ecosystems, but also led to their contamination with heavy metals and other toxic elements that were stored in the sediment at the bottom of the reservoir.
