Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić said that his country remains committed to the idea of membership in the European Union and wants to accelerate the process of European integration.
According to Reuters, Vučić said this a few days after a visit to Moscow, where he participated in a parade organized by russian dictator vladimir putin.
Today, May 13, Vučić met with the President of the European Council António Costa. During the meeting, the Serbian leader said that Belgrade wants to accelerate European integration.
"The atmosphere in the EU is not entirely good. I am convinced of this after a trip to Moscow, but I believe that Europe will show understanding for progress based on merit," Vučić said.
Reuters recalls that Serbia is one of russia's few European allies. The aggressor country is the main supplier of natural gas, and its companies Gazprom and Gazpromneft own the Serbian oil company NIS.
Serbia wants to become a member of the European Union, but Brussels is in no hurry to accept the country into the bloc, as Belgrade needs to fight corruption, reform the judicial system, improve relations with Kosovo and bring its foreign policy into line with the bloc's policy.
The President of the European Council said at a meeting with Aleksandar Vučić that he was glad to hear that EU membership is a priority for Serbia.
"What needs to be done <...> is to ensure media freedom, end corruption and improve electoral legislation," Costa said.
As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, in April 2024, Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić said that Belgrade does not intend to replace the path to the EU with BRICS membership.
We also wrote that the intelligence of the aggressor country, russia, organized an information campaign in Serbia directed against Ukraine and the European Union.
