In Mexico, mayoral candidate shot dead in front of people during election campaign rally

In the Mexican state of Veracruz, a mayoral candidate for the city of Tequixtepec, Yesenia Lara Gutierrez, was killed during a public event that was broadcast live. Three other people were killed and three were injured.

This was reported by CNN.

The attack occurred on the evening of May 11, just during a campaign rally that was broadcast on Facebook. The video shows Gutierrez, a representative of the ruling Morena party, greeting people on the street when more than 20 shots suddenly rang out.

According to the state prosecutor's office, four people were killed, including the candidate herself. Three other participants in the event were injured.

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said on May 12: “We are coordinating our actions, including with the security minister, and are providing all the necessary support during this electoral period, together with the authorities of the state of Veracruz.”

“Attacks on politicians, especially candidates for local office, have become a common occurrence in Mexico during the electoral process. According to the human rights organization Data Cívica, last year the country recorded a record 661 attacks on people or premises related to political activity. Many of the victims held or were running for municipal office.

In May 2024, a mayoral candidate was killed during a campaign rally in the state of Guerrero. A few days later, the mayor of Cotia, in the state of Michoacán, was shot dead as she was returning home from the gym. In October, the newly elected mayor of Chilpancingo was killed less than a week after being elected,” she said.
