White smoke appeared from the chimney of the Sistine Chapel, indicating the election of a new Pope. It was reported by Vatican News on Thursday, May 8.
The 133 cardinal electors, gathered in the Sistine Chapel of the Vatican, elected a new Pope. He should soon appear in the central window of St. Peter's Basilica.
"The bells of St. Peter's Basilica ring out, confirming the election of the new Pope," the report says.
Reuters writes that after the vote, the conclave asks the Pope if he agrees to this and what name he wishes to take. After agreeing, the new Pope puts on white robes and sits on a throne in the Sistine Chapel to receive other cardinals, who pay him homage and promise obedience.
The senior cardinal appears on the balcony of St. Peter's Basilica and announces in Latin: "Annuntio vobis gaudium magnum. Habemus Papam" ("I announce to you great joy. We have a Pope"). He calls the new Pope by his name, translating his name into Latin, and then gives the name chosen by the new leader of the Church.
After the announcement, the new Pope stepped forward to deliver his first public address and his first blessing "Urbi et Orbi" ("To the City and the World") to the crowd in St. Peter's Square.
A few days later, the new Pope will celebrate the Mass that marks the beginning of his ministry.
As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, on May 5, all 133 cardinals arrived at the Vatican to elect a new Pope.
On May 8, the Conclave failed to elect a new Pope on the first day of voting.
