Trump administration offers Ukraine to accept third-country nationals deported from US - WP

The administration of the President of the United States of America Donald Trump earlier this year called on the Ukrainian government to accept an unspecified number of third-country nationals deported from the US. This is reported by The Washington Post, citing documents reviewed by journalists.

WP called the US request "unique" for a country at war and dependent on American military and financial support.

The documents reviewed by journalists do not indicate how officials in Kyiv reacted to the proposal, which was conveyed by a senior American diplomat. The Ukrainian diplomat told the US Embassy only that the government would respond as soon as it formulates a position.

It is noted that to date Ukraine has not accepted deported migrants from the US, and there is no indication that Kyiv has seriously considered the Americans' proposal. At the same time, two Ukrainian officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, said that the issue had never reached the highest levels of government. The White House has not yet made “political demands.”

The documents also cite a Ukrainian diplomat who told his American counterparts that while Ukraine has a “reliable history of accepting its citizens after they have been deported by the United States,” the government in Kyiv is in a wartime emergency. Former U.S. officials said that the dialogue between the U.S. and Ukraine on the deportation issue was unusual and not part of normal diplomatic work.

WP journalists also found that a number of other countries received similar offers from the United States earlier this year. Several governments in Latin America, including El Salvador, Mexico, Costa Rica and Panama, have agreed to accept deportees who are not their citizens. In particular, El Salvador was paid millions of dollars by the Trump administration to house the deportees. Others it has intimidated with tariffs and other measures, including threats to take away the Panama Canal from Panama.

In addition, the US wants to involve Rwanda, which has a "poor human rights record" and is also in a state of conflict.

As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, the US Department of Homeland Security previously announced a new initiative: illegal immigrants who agree to leave the country on their own will receive a one-time payment of USD 1,000 and travel expenses.
