Merz, who called for transfer of Taurus missiles to Ukraine, elected new German Chancellor

The leader of the German conservative bloc of CDU/CSU parties, Friedrich Merz, received the required majority of votes and became Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany. This was reported by Die Zeit on Tuesday, May 6.

325 MPs voted for Merz's appointment as Chancellor. He became the tenth Chancellor of Germany.

"The exact result of the election: 618 votes, 325 "for", 289 "against", one abstention, three votes declared invalid," the report says.

The publication writes that the newly elected Chancellor arrived at Bellevue Palace in a limousine to receive a certificate of appointment from German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier.

As a reminder, on January 9, 2024, Friedrich Merz once again called on Chancellor Olaf Scholz to stop delaying the supply of Taurus cruise missiles to Ukraine.

On February 15, 2025, Merz announced his intention to change Berlin's policy regarding the supply of Taurus long-range missiles to the Ukrainian Armed Forces after the elections.

As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, on May 6, the candidate for the position of Chancellor of Germany and leader of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU), Friedrich Merz, failed to win the first round of voting in the Bundestag.
