Canada launches process to seize russia's largest cargo plane An-124

The federal prosecutor of Canada has filed a lawsuit in the Ontario Supreme Court to seize the russian An-124 Ruslan, which has been blocked in Toronto since 2022 due to sanctions. The plane belongs to the sanctioned company Volga-Dnepr and is valued at USD 300 million, Insauga writes.

In 2023, the plane was officially seized, and the Canadian government announced its intention to transfer it to Ukraine. To speed up the process, the russian sanctioned companies Volga-Dnepr and Sberbank were added to the warrant, which strengthens the legal basis for the seizure.

Trying to avoid losing, the russian company filed a lawsuit demanding USD 100 million in compensation for the seized plane. However, according to the publication, the chances of success are minimal, since the case is being considered in the context of sanctions against the russian federation for aggression against Ukraine.

As previously reported, in March, US senators called on the White House to transfer frozen russian assets to support Ukraine. The corresponding letter to US Secretary of State Marco Rubio was signed by Republican senators Todd Young and Lindsey Graham, as well as Democrats Richard Blumenthal and Tim Kaine.
