The signing of the agreement between Ukraine and the United States on access to Ukrainian subsoil resources has important political significance and may positively affect the future support for Ukraine by the Donald Trump administration.
Oleksandr Merezhko, a Member of Parliament from the Servant of the People faction, chairman of the parliamentary committee on foreign policy, said this at a briefing, the Ukrainian News agency reports.
"And Trump is looking... We must take into account his worldview, how he looks at this agreement. He looks at it in such a way that now there will be American interests in Ukraine that need to be protected, and this gives him an argument before his voters to provide assistance to Ukraine," Merezhko said.
According to the MP, the signed agreement is not only a step towards economic cooperation, but also a political strategy that can provide Ukraine with more stable support from Washington.
"From a political point of view, I believe that it is still a win-win, so to speak, that is, it is a success, since we are already seeing changes in Trump's attitude. For example, today there was a statement about the readiness to sell Ukraine weapons worth USD 50 million," Merezhko noted.
In his opinion, the main goal of the agreement is to encourage the United States to further provide security and economic assistance to Ukraine.
The growing presence of American business in Ukraine creates additional incentives for the United States to maintain a strategic partnership, Merezhko emphasized.
As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, on the night of May 1, Ukraine and the United States of America signed a strategic agreement on the creation of a Reconstruction Investment Fund and partnership in the field of critical minerals.
