US can no longer finance Europe's security due to large national debt – Mike Waltz

The US can no longer afford to "subsidize" its NATO allies due to a national debt of USD 33 trillion.

Mike Waltz, the US president's national security adviser, stated this in an interview with the New York Post.

He also added that Ukraine's defense must be led by Europe.

The presidential adviser also noted that some countries, such as Norway and Finland, are already preparing to increase their defense spending in light of new geopolitical challenges. At the same time, according to Waltz, Spain, Canada and Italy are not spending enough on military needs.

Mike Waltz stressed that the Donald Trump administration will continue to support Europe in military and diplomatic terms, but at the same time will require allies to "pay their share".

As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, European NATO member states have begun work on a plan that involves shifting the financial and military burden from the United States to other members of the alliance.

In November 2024, the European Parliament proposed creating a military organization that would defend Europe in parallel with NATO.
