Ukraine changes rules of war thanks to unmanned systems: how drones determine course of hostilities in 2025

2025 was a turning point for the Ukrainian Unmanned Systems Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, which became the dominant force on the battlefield. From reconnaissance to pinpoint strikes on enemy equipment and manpower – drones changed the course of war and became strategic actors capable of radically changing the situation on the front.

Drones on the ground and in the sky: the production of Ukrainian unmanned systems is growing

Ukraine is actively increasing the production of unmanned systems. During 2024, Ukrainian production of unmanned systems grew rapidly. In 2025, Ukraine had already supplied the army with more than 1.25 million drones of various types: from simple reconnaissance to heavy strike platforms.

Mykhailo Fedorov, Minister of Digital Transformation, noted that 90% of drones used on the battlefield are manufactured in Ukraine, and this became possible thanks to close cooperation between the state and business.

Drones are no longer only in the sky. Unmanned ground platforms are actively used to deliver cargo, evacuate the wounded, and in combat operations. As Deputy Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Andrii Lebedenko notes, "drones today have become more effective than artillery." Their ability to act quickly and accurately, as well as minimize human losses, allows Ukraine to gain a strategic advantage even in numerically unequal battles. They have replaced large combat units that are expensive and take time to move. Unmanned aerial vehicles operate continuously, striking at the slightest movement of the enemy.

Innovations are the basis of victory: "Trident" and DELTA have appeared

Ukrainian forces are also actively implementing the latest technologies to combat enemy drones. The latest achievement is the "Trident" system, which effectively neutralizes enemy strike drones using laser technology.

In addition, in 2025, the Ukrainian army began using the DELTA system, which collects and analyzes data from various sources, such as drones, satellites, and mobile phones. The system allows for operational decisions, providing commanders with full access to the necessary information in real time.

The state supports the development of the Unmanned Systems Forces

Recently, Deputy Minister of Defense Valerii Churkin initiated a working meeting to unite manufacturers of FPV drones, engineers, scientists, and the Ministry of Defense. This allows for the creation of standards for serial production and unification of UAVs, which optimizes operator training and technical support.

To ensure the development of unmanned technologies, the state continues to actively cooperate with manufacturers. The Ministry of Defense of Ukraine launched the DOT-Chain Defence system, which allows units to quickly order the necessary equipment, including drones and robotic complexes.

Thanks to such innovations, Ukraine is not only changing the course of war, but also demonstrating to the world how technology can become a decisive factor on the battlefield.
