Senator Elizabeth Warren, representing Massachusetts, sharply criticized the tariff policy of US President Donald Trump after the White House announced the exemption of smartphones, computers and microcircuits from large-scale tariffs imposed on most trading partners. This is reported by ABC News.
"Look, there is no tariff policy. It's just all chaos and corruption. That's all we have going on," said Warren.
The senator also drew attention to the inconsistency of the actions of the US President.
"And how can you believe any of these guys? What did Donald Trump tweet out all in caps -- 'I will not back down.' How many hours was that? 24 hours, 30 hours before he turned around and backed down?" Warren noted.
The senator also accused the Trump team of lies and manipulation.
“They talk about an emergency. They've got a 10% tariff on basically every country in the world, everywhere. What's the emergency that we have with Belgium or the emergency we have with South Korea?” Warren asked.
Markets have rallied since Trump’s tariff pause, but many experts are still warning about high prices for Americans and the dangers of a trade war with China.
“Donald Trump and the Republicans are, it's like they've taken a 5-gallon bucket of paint and just thrown it across the economy and said, 'There, that will take care of everything.' They are trying to put tariffs in place on every country, on virtually every product that they export to the United States, and they're trying to do it all at once with no policy in mind,” Warren added.
Asked about the possibility of the courts intervening in the situation, Warren said Democrats are ready to oppose and limit the president’s power, and Republicans must decide whether to continue to obey Trump or “stand up for the American people and to stand up for the American economy.”
As previously reported, Trump's tariffs could leave the US without Christmas and New Year. Chinese manufacturers of plastic Christmas trees and other holiday decorations have still not received orders from American customers, which they attribute to the increase in tariffs on imports from China.
