Ukraine has officially established diplomatic relations with Somalia.
Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha announced this on X, the Ukrainian News agency reports.
"Today, we officially established diplomatic relations with Somalia. I signed relevant protocol with Somalia’s State Minister For Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Ali Mohamed Omar," he said.
Sybiha noted that Ukraine has provided assistance to Somalia within the framework of the Grain from Ukraine program and is ready to continue strengthening food security.
He added that Ukraine appreciates Somalia's support for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine.
As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, Sybiha is visiting Turkey on April 10-12 for negotiations on achieving a just and sustainable peace for Ukraine and ensuring freedom of navigation in the Black Sea. Sybiha is participating in the Antalya Diplomatic Forum in Turkey, and a number of bilateral meetings of the Minister with colleagues from Africa, the Middle East and Europe are planned on the sidelines of the forum.
Earlier, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced its intention to establish diplomatic relations with Somalia. To date, diplomatic relations have not been established between Ukraine and Somalia, and the rights and interests of Ukrainian citizens in Somalia were protected by the Embassy of Ukraine in Kenya.
In September 2022, Ukraine allocated 50,000 tons of wheat as humanitarian aid to Ethiopia and Somalia.
