Bridget Brink is leaving the post of US Ambassador to Ukraine amid growing tension in relations with the new White House administration.
The Financial Times has reported this, citing sources familiar with her decision.
It is noted that Brink was under increasing pressure from senior officials from Donald Trump's team, who doubted her readiness to support a new policy towards Ukraine. This course is significantly different from the approach of the Joe Biden administration, which provided large-scale military and financial assistance to Kyiv.
"Ambassador Brink is stepping down. She’s been the ambassador there for three years — that’s a long time in a war zone," said State Department spokeswoman Tammy Bruce.
The publication emphasizes that Brink remained one of Ukraine's key diplomatic partners since the beginning of the full-scale invasion. " Western diplomats in Kyiv said Brink had been a crucial advocate for Kyiv in public and in private since the early weeks of Russia's full-scale invasion in 2022. One described her as a “strong character” and “serious diplomat”, but the pressure from Trump's and Zelenskyy's offices had taken a toll."
At the same time, Ukrainian officials have seen Brink as overly critical of domestic policy, particularly in the fight against corruption. They say the ambassador's rhetoric has recently become closer to Trump's position and increasingly critical of Kyiv.
As the FT notes, an analysis of Brink's posts on the X network suggests a shift in her rhetoric since Trump's inauguration on January 20. In the 75 days before Trump took office, she publicly criticized russia and its actions in Ukraine 53 times, but in the 75 days after, she mentioned russia only five times, and never once held it responsible for the war.
As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, on April 6, US Ambassador to Ukraine Bridget Brink responded to the missile strikes by the aggressor country russia on Ukraine, as she wrote, "from Russia."
