The first ship with coking coal from the USA, chartered by the Metinvest Group, has arrived in Ukraine this year.
This is stated in the company's message, Ukrainian News Agency reports.
The message states that the bulk carrier Bison brought 80,000 tons of coal from the Group's own enterprise in the USA - United Coal Company (UCC), which will help ensure the stable operation of the Group's Ukrainian metallurgical plants after the suspension of the Pokrovsk Coal Group.
It is noted that Metinvest expects to receive one ship with 80,000 tons of American coking coal each month, which will allow it to cover part of the needs of Zaporizhstal and Kametstal.
Due to the suspension of the Pokrovsk Coal Group, the supply of coking coal to metallurgical enterprises has ceased.
Pokrovsk Coal Group is the only producer of coking coal in Ukraine, which is needed for the operation of metallurgical enterprises.
The coal enterprise provided a significant share of coking coal for Metinvest's own consumption, and also supplied significant volumes to consumers both in Ukraine and abroad.
After the asset was suspended, Metinvest switched to alternative sources of coking coal. Among the measures implemented were the use of accumulated reserves, additional supplies of coking coal and coke from outside, as well as an increase in supplies from UCC.
United Coal Company is a producer of metallurgical coal operating in the Appalachian region of the USA. The company, founded in 2004, was acquired by Metinvest Group in April 2009.
As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, in mid-January, Metinvest Group suspended the operation of the Pokrovsk Coal Group due to the change in the situation on the front line, electricity shortages, and the worsening security situation.
The main shareholders of Metinvest Group are SCM (71.24%) and Smart Holding Group (23.76%), which participate in the management of Metinvest on a partnership basis.
100% of SCM shares belong to businessman Rinat Akhmetov.
