NABU unit head Romaniuk bought luxury cars and real estate and registered them in names of relatives - investigation

The head of one of the National Anti-Corruption Bureau’s (NABU) units, Mykhailo Romaniuk, was found to have VIP cars and real estate registered in the names of relatives, and the detective himself recently purchased a new apartment in an elite residential complex for several million hryvnias under a preferential program. And his brother has been on trial for bribery for 8 years, says the journalistic investigation by Informator.ua.

"Cars. At first there was a Mercedes-Benz E 220 CDI, which belonged to the mother-in-law of detective Natalia Podchynok. In 2022, the Mercedes disappeared from the declaration, and instead an AUDI A6 appeared, which already belonged to his father Oleksandr Romaniuk. Real estate. An apartment in Irpin, Kyiv Region. Registered in the name of his mother, Vira. Another achievement of the fighter against corruption in the midst of the war is a land plot in Bucha, Kyiv Region, with an area of 1,320 square meters and an unfinished (allegedly) house of 219 square meters. Both the house and the land plot are also registered in the name of his mother, Vira Romaniuk," the investigation notes.

Only in the declaration for 2024 alone, the publication noted, an apartment of 117.4 square meters, which belongs directly to him, appeared in the declaration of Mykhailo Romaniuk. And that one was purchased under a preferential state program.

"The apartment was purchased on a mortgage under the e-Housing program. This program contains a limited list of those who can use it. Among them, since August 2023, are NABU detectives, who were equated in this way to soldiers of the Armed Forces of Ukraine fighting against russia," the authors of the investigation emphasized.

They noted that one of the most famous cases that Mykhailo Romaniuk conducted after moving to the NABU is Rotterdam+.

"Since Mykhailo Romaniuk took on the case, the Bureau has been repeatedly accused of delaying and, as a result, "dropping" this case. The last mention of it is dated November 8 last year: the High Anti-Corruption Court (HACC) refused to dismiss it. The longer Romaniuk kept the story with Rotterdam + on hold, the richer he became," they wrote.

According to journalists, such things are only possible if the leadership knows about everything.

"Everything in this story is disgusting. Judging by the information received, the NABU leadership knows about it. And approves it," they noted.

The authors of the investigation recalled that for 8 years, the Sviatoshynskyi District Court of Kyiv has never made a decision regarding the accused brother of Mykhailo Romaniuk - senior investigator of the Kyivo-Sviatoshynska Tax Inspectorate, Ihor Romaniuk.

"According to the Prosecutor General's Office, this investigator demanded and received a bribe of USD 20,000 from the head of a company. Romaniuk's most likely talisman from prison is his brother - Mykhailo Romaniuk, who has made a successful career in the National Anti-Corruption Bureau all these years," Informator.ua noted.

The journalists reported that Mykhailo Romaniuk himself worked in the central office of the tax police until 2016.

"According to our data, he was known among his colleagues for his extraordinary appetite for extorting bribes from entrepreneurs. We remember the pressure on business by tax authorities at that time well. There, as they say, he "made his starting capital," Informator.ua concluded.

As reported, law enforcement officers recently detained a representative of the NABU for the manufacture and sale of drugs. The criminal group he led was cooking and selling amphetamine, and was also involved in smuggling the drug precursor phenylnitropropene. The group's monthly income is estimated at over UAH 50 million.
