The Estonian Parliament (Riigikogu) will consider a bill that allows the country's armed forces to use weapons against ships if necessary to protect infrastructure in the Baltic Sea.
According to the Estonian portal ERR, the bill will be considered next week.
The day before, the Riigikogu's State Defense Committee approved a bill that would allow the Estonian army to use force in Estonian territorial waters to protect infrastructure, defense facilities, ports, structures, equipment or ships. This extreme measure can be used if other means cannot help.
The use of force is allowed if the damage is significantly less than the potential damage caused by the threat.
According to the chairman of the committee, Kalev Stoicescu, the changes will allow Estonia to operate not only in territorial waters, but also in the country's exclusive economic zone.
The vote on this bill is scheduled for next week.
As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, on April 7, it became known that the European Union refused to finance an anti-UAV defense system for Estonia and Latvia.
We also wrote that in March this year, Estonia announced plans to denounce the Ottawa Convention, which prohibits the use, stockpiling and production of anti-personnel mines.
