This week, several Ukrainians who are legally in the US under the humanitarian program received emails informing them that their status had been revoked and they had seven days to leave the country.
This is reported by the authors of the Reuters agency.
In addition to the notice of the revocation of the status, it was noted that if they do not leave the US within the specified period, "the federal government will find" them.
"If you do not immediately leave the territory of the United States, law enforcement measures may be taken against you, which will lead to your deportation from the country. We inform you again: the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is revoking your humanitarian status. Do not attempt to remain in the US," Reuters quotes the authors of the letter
However, on Friday, a spokesperson for the US Department of Homeland Security said that the email was sent in error and that the humanitarian program for Ukrainians, established after the russian invasion of the country in 2022, had not been terminated.
The agency added that it was not known how many Ukrainians received such an email.
DHS sent a follow-up letter to the affected people, informing them that the order was in error.
“The terms of your previously issued humanitarian status remain unchanged,” the letter said.
