Russia has complained about the attack by Ukrainian drones on Saransk. The Optical Fiber Systems plant was hit - the first and only enterprise in the russian federation that produces fiber optic cables for controlling UAVs at the front.
Residents of Saransk heard explosions and observed a strong fire in the factory building. Local publications and russian media write about this, and the governor of Mordovia also acknowledged the attack. Judging by reports on russian Telegram channels, the explosions in Saransk began at approximately 2:20 am and lasted until the morning. Local residents counted at least ten of them. Numerous videos that appeared on the network show several drones flying at once, as the russians who are filming what is happening say, "on fiber optic cables."
In one of the videos, the author, recording the flight of a drone, states that this is the ninth drone he has observed.
Such drone activity was not in vain.
"There was a UAV attack on Saransk. Eyewitnesses are observing a strong fire in the building of the Optical Fiber Systems plant," russian media report.
The arrivals at the plant were acknowledged by the governor of Mordovia, Artem Zdunov.
"Tonight, one of the enterprises in Mordovia was attacked by a UAV. All necessary forces and means have been deployed to eliminate the consequences. Operational and emergency services are working on the territory. According to preliminary information, there are no casualties. A strong request to all residents of the republic - do not post photos and videos from the scene!" the official wrote at about 4 am local time.
At the same time, some russian media outlets, publishing videos of the hits, write about an "attempted attack on the plant".
Optical Fiber Systems is the first and only plant in russia producing optical fiber, which is used to control UAVs in the combat zone. Such drones pose a particular danger to Ukrainian soldiers, since they are not sensitive to the effects of electronic warfare.
The official opening of the plant took place on September 25, 2015. The company's shareholders are RUSNANO, Gazprombank and the government of Mordovia.
The company's products occupy about 25% of the russian market: production capacity is 4 million km of optical fiber per year.
A strike on a plant engaged in the production of fiber-optic systems weakens key components of military communications and control, including for fiber optic drones.
