The European Union is preparing large fines for the social network X (formerly Twitter), owned by American billionaire Elon Musk. The reason for this was the violation of laws on combating disinformation and illegal content.
The American publication The New York Times announced this, citing its own sources.
The unnamed interlocutors of the publication said that the amount of the fine could exceed USD 1 billion. By doing this, EU regulators want to set an example for other platforms and deter them from violating the laws.
Now the European authorities are weighing how much such a large fine could worsen relations between the EU and the US amid disputes over trade, tariffs and the war in Ukraine.
One of the interlocutors said that the sanctions against X (Twitter) will include a fine and a requirement to make changes to its products.
According to other sources, the European Union is conducting another investigation into the social network. It is more extensive and may lead to additional fines.
As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, in November 2024, American writer Stephen King announced that he was leaving X (Twitter) due to the too "toxic atmosphere" that filled the social network.
