Danylo Hetmantsev, a member of the Verkhovna Rada from the Servant of the People faction and chairman of the parliamentary committee on finance, tax and customs policy, believes that the US's introduction of a 10% tariff for Ukraine when Ukraine's foreign trade deficit with the US is USD 2.6 billion is economic cynicism.
Hetmantsev announced this on his Telegram channel, the Ukrainian News agency reports.
"Actually, introducing a 10% tariff when our foreign trade deficit with the US is USD 2.6 billion is economic cynicism of the highest order," he wrote.
Hetmantsev noted that the 10% tariff itself will not have a major negative effect on Ukraine, given the small part of its merchandise exports to the US (USD 0.9 billion or 2% of all exports in 2024). He added that he is not sure that Ukraine should respond in kind to this.
Hetmantsev believes that the global trade war will significantly affect the economies of Ukraine's partners, primarily the EU, they will slow down, and therefore generate less money, which will reduce the possibilities of helping Ukraine.
"At the same time, the governments of partner countries will be forced to turn on protectionism and not only regarding American goods. And these protectionist measures will hit us much more significantly. Remember last year's issues of blocking agricultural exports in a much more favorable global market situation," he noted.
As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, on April 2, US President Donald Trump announced the introduction of "reciprocal tariffs" in response to the actions of other countries in the world, in particular, Ukraine will be subject to "basic" 10% tariffs.
First Deputy Prime Minister - Minister of Economy Yuliia Svyrydenko noted that the introduction of new tariffs by the United States is difficult for Ukraine, but not critical.
