The administration of US President Donald Trump has dismissed employees of American healthcare institutions as part of the implementation of a plan to reduce 10,000 jobs in the healthcare sector.
This was reported by Reuters, citing sources.
Thus, the dismissals took place at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Food and Drug Administration, and the National Institutes of Health.
In particular, it is reported that the head of the Center for Tobacco Products of the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Brian King, has been dismissed. It is also known that the director of the Office of New Drugs of the FDA's Center for Drug Evaluation and Research, Peter Stein, has resigned.
Their dismissal is an example of the resignation of senior management in all FDA departments, including the departments for drugs, food, vaccines, medical devices and tobacco products. Staff are also being dismissed.
According to an FDA official, agency workers were required to show their badges at the entrance to the building, and those fired were given tickets and told to go home.
Other fired employees received emails Tuesday morning saying that their dismissals were not related to their work, performance or conduct, and that they would be placed on immediate administrative leave.
According to another source, the fired CDC employees worked at the National Center for Environmental Health, the Office on Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services, and the National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases. The source said at least one person who worked on the federal response to measles outbreaks was also among the layoffs.
As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, Trump also said that the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), headed by Elon Musk, will cease to exist at a certain time. According to the head of the White House, Musk will remain a special civil servant for only 130 days.
