Positive developments in the process of resolving the war in Ukraine are possible, but probably not in the near future.
The head of the Federation Council's Committee on International Affairs Grigory Karasin, who participated in the negotiations in Saudi Arabia, has stated this.
"Maybe not this year or at the end of this year," he explained in an interview with the propaganda TV channel "Russia-24".
The senator described the past meetings as "calm" and "constructive", but acknowledged their poor performance.
"It would be naive to expect any breakthrough results at the first meeting," he noted.
According to Karasin, the key topics of the negotiations between the russian and US delegations were the issues of shipping safety in the Black Sea, the resumption of exports of russian agricultural products and the connection of the Russian Agricultural Bank (Rosselkhozbank) to the SWIFT system.
The senator stressed that "in principle, it is possible to work with the American delegation" because its representatives "listen, perceive, and oppose some of their positions." He also expressed confidence that such meetings will be continued, and new tasks will be set before the russian negotiating team.
Karasin clarified that during the many-hour consultations in Riyadh, the American side initially put forward conditions unacceptable to russia. According to the senator, at first, US representatives tried to take on the role of mediators who would make decisions for both sides, but quickly realized that "this will not work with the Russian side."
The negotiations in Riyadh started on March 23. The American delegation held separate meetings with representatives of Ukraine and russia, concluding them on March 25.
