Kanzi, unique chimpanzee who communicated using symbols, died

In the USA, at the Ape Initiative conservation center, a male bonobo chimpanzee Kanzi died. He was 44 years old. He had unique language abilities and participated in numerous scientific studies.

This is reported by the Scientific American magazine.

According to the center, on March 18, Kanzi behaved as usual, without any signs of illness. However, after breakfast, employees noticed that the monkey did not respond to them. Kanzi was being treated for heart disease, regularly performed an electrocardiogram and monitored blood pressure. Despite the efforts of doctors, the animal died. To determine the cause of death, his body was sent for an examination.

Kanzi was born in 1980 at the Emory National Primate Research Center in Atlanta, Georgia. From an early age, he showed interest in symbolic communication, watching the training of his adoptive mother Matatu, who avoided interacting with researchers. In the process of learning, Kanzi mastered hundreds of lexigrams - symbols that denoted objects, actions and abstract concepts, and even combined them to create new meanings.

In addition to linguistic abilities, Kanzi demonstrated skills in making and using stone tools. For this, he was called the "bonobo genius". He knew how to make fire, cook food, and also mastered video games such as Pac-Man and Minecraft. Thanks to these abilities, scientists studied the cognitive abilities of primates and their ability to learn.

Recall that in February of this year, the power went out on the island of Sri Lanka because of a monkey that climbed into a transformer.
