The outage in Ukrzaliznytsia's systems, which occurred on March 23, was caused by a large-scale cyberattack. Online ticket sales remain unavailable, and the company is preparing to operate offline during the day.
This was reported by the company's press service.
"Officially! Ukrzaliznytsia's online systems have been subjected to a large-scale targeted cyberattack. The restoration of all systems has lasted all day and is currently ongoing. Ukrzaliznytsia's specialists are closely cooperating with the cyber department of the Security Service of Ukraine (SSU)," the message says.
It is noted that the enemy failed to achieve the key thing: train traffic is stable, they run clearly without delays, and all operational processes of the movement have been debugged in a backup format.
"Since Ukrzaliznytsia has been the target of enemy cyberattacks before, the company has implemented backup protocols," the company explained.
Ukrzaliznytsia reported that the attack was very systematic, non-trivial, and multi-level, so before a full recovery from "backups," specialists from Ukrzaliznytsia, many involved partners, and the SSU cyber department must thoroughly test the services for possible vulnerabilities.
Currently, online ticket sales remain unavailable; during this day, the company is preparing to work offline.
How Ukrzaliznytsia is currently operating:
- tickets are sold through ticket offices. We are strengthening ticket offices with staff, expanding work schedules;
- on March 24 and 25, the sale of international tickets at ticket offices has been activated (usually only online);
- in an extreme case, if you do not have time to purchase a ticket through the ticket office, go directly to the train. Our train crews have been informed how to arrange your travel on the spot (we apologize in advance, there may not be seats available in all classes, but we strive to transport everyone).
"If you are planning a trip later than the morning trip on March 25, we strongly ask you not to storm the ticket offices today. They will work with exclusive priority to serve passengers departing today-tomorrow; we will inform you immediately after the restoration of online services and everyone will be able to purchase a ticket online," the company urged.
Anyone who wants to return their ticket for the train departing on March 24 can do so online. At least an hour before the departure, you must send a scanned copy or a clear photo of the ticket and a contact phone number to [email protected] - the application for a refund will be processed within 3 days from the moment the systems are restored.
As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, on March 23, due to a technical failure in the IT system of JSC Ukrzaliznytsia, online services stopped working.
Queues formed at stations due to a failure in Ukrzaliznytsia. Specialists of Ukrzaliznytsia are working around the clock to provide pleasant updates tomorrow, March 24, in the morning. Currently, the restoration of online services is ongoing.
