Pope Francis makes first public appearance, addresses faithful in person

Pope Francis appeared before the faithful for the first time since his hospitalization from the balcony of Rome's Gemelli Hospital, before leaving the facility where he has been staying since February 14. The Holy See Press Office announced this, Vatican News reported on Sunday evening, March 23.

The Pope greeted those waiting for him in the square in front of the entrance to Rome's Gemelli Hospital. The Pontiff blessed the crowd of about 3,000 people who applauded and greeted him.

"He said only a few words from a small balcony directly above the crowd gathered below. With an effort, placing his hands on his knees, he raised them to bless the crowd," the report said.

As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, on March 7, Pope Francis recorded an audio message and thanked everyone who supported and worried about him.

Recall, on February 22, it became known that the Pontiff suffered a prolonged respiratory crisis and is in critical condition.

On February 25, doctors reported that the Pope is in critical, but stable condition.
