The UK came under pressure after a public quarrel between Presidents Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Donald Trump. London was demanded to publicly criticize the Ukrainian leader for the incident.
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said this in an interview with The New York Times.
According to him, on the day of the public quarrel between Zelenskyy and Trump (February 28, 2025 - ed.), London was demanded to make very critical statements.
"We were pressured to make very critical statements, using, you know, colorful adjectives to describe what others are feeling," Starmer said.
He did not specify which country was pressuring Britain.
The British Prime Minister added that he was of the opinion that it was "better to pick up the phone" and talk to both sides.
Starmer sent his national security adviser to Kyiv to instruct Zelenskyy on how he could improve relations with the head of the White House.
During numerous meetings, they managed to work out wording designed to alleviate Zelenskyy's concerns about a possible ceasefire.
Starmer then called Trump to report on progress in Kyiv and lay the groundwork for a new conversation with Zelenskyy.
As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, Volodymyr Zelenskyy arrived in Washington on February 28 to meet with Donald Trump.
The main purpose of the Ukrainian President's visit was to sign a mineral agreement. The Ukrainian President also planned to give a speech at the Hudson Institute.
However, during the public part of the meeting, Zelenskyy got into a heated argument with Trump over Washington's soft approach to russian dictator vladimir putin.
Recall that Friedrich Merz, a potential candidate for the position of German Chancellor, stated that the public quarrel between Zelenskyy and Trump was purposefully provoked by Washington.
