IAEA reports reduction in military activity around Zaporizhzhia NPP

The Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Rafael Grossi, stated that his organization is ready to help if the Zaporizhzhia NPP, where the IAEA mission is located, becomes part of the negotiations on ending the russian federation's war against Ukraine.

It was reported on the official website of the international agency.

"We all wish for this devastating war to end as soon as possible. With our in-depth knowledge and expertise about the situation at the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant, we stand ready to provide our technical contributions and support in the implementation of a future agreement regarding the plant," Grossi said.

He noted that the IAEA mission will remain at the Zaporizhzhia NPP "as long as it is needed to help ensure nuclear safety and security."

The International Atomic Energy Agency has traditionally not mentioned in its releases that nuclear safety in Ukraine is under threat due to russian aggression and the seizure of the Zaporizhzhia NPP by russian occupiers.

"Last week, the IAEA team reported hearing military activities at various distances away from the ZNPP, but it had appeared quieter so far this week," the agency writes.

The agency's mission to the Zaporizhzhia NPP reports "signs of corrosion" in the area of the second power unit of the NPP, as well as a "lack of personnel and other resources" at the occupier-controlled plant.

"The maintenance being conducted is not yet at the comprehensive level that would normally be expected," Grossi states.
