Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty (RFE/RL) has filed a lawsuit against the US Agency for Global Media (USAGM) and its officials. The publication demands to block the government's attempt to terminate the funding provided by the US Congress.
This is announced in the statement of the publication.
According to the leadership of Radio Liberty, the denial of funding contradicts American laws, in particular the US Constitution, which gives Congress the exclusive right to allocate federal funds. The lawsuit was filed in the District Court of the District of Columbia.
RFE/RL President Steven Kapus said that cutting funding could weaken independent journalism, which would only play into the hands of authoritarian regimes. "Now is not the time to give way to propaganda and censorship by America's opponents. We are confident that the law is on our side," he stressed.
Radio Liberty has been operating since 1953, speaks more than 20 languages, and specializes in independent investigations and democracy support. Its activities are funded by the US Congress through USAGM.
As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, on March 15, US President Donald Trump signed an executive order ordering the reduction of funding for seven government agencies as part of the government's efforts to cut spending.
The US Agency for Global Media (USAGM), which includes Radio Liberty and Voice of America, was affected by the funding cuts.
As a reminder, Radio Liberty Executive Director Steven Kapus said that Trump's decision to cut funding is "a big gift to America's enemies."
